The main product characteristics are set, in function and in shape.

B definitive design phase - optimizing selected design -

The main assembly is constructed.

C pré-engineering phase - detailing the parts -

All parts are defined in their end shape, the production methods are selected.

D engineering phase - preparing for production -

The production requirements are implemented in the part details.
